Five Listening Recommendations for Your Next Run

I’m falling into fall on my feet.

Can’t you just feel that seasonal shift in the air? The temperatures are slowly sinking; the breeze is just a nip cooler. Okay, okay, okay, so it’s probably all in my head, but at least the skies are back to blue here in Sac.

It’s prime running weather.

When I started running, I refrained from listening to podcasts or music. I’m not really sure why. I think I liked the idea of listening to nothing but the environment. The murmur of cars, the trill of birds, the breeze rustling through the trees, these sounds helped me feel present during a run. You can’t distract yourself from the distance with the musical musings or introspective ramblings of another. You’re in the thick of it, just your body and your mind.

Nowadays, my mindset is different. Especially when it comes to long runs. The right music can imbue you with a much-needed jolt of energy; the right podcast can make the miles slip by. It’s really quite amazing.

Below, I’ve gathered together five listening recommendations for your runs. Enjoy! And please, let me know what you like to listen to while running. Happy running and listen safely!

1. Billy Yang Podcast

First up is the Billy Yang Podcast. Billy Yang is a podcaster, filmmaker and runner. I stumbled upon his podcast a few months ago and have found immense value in the show, with its cornucopia of episodes featuring ultra runners and endurance athletes. With around 60 episodes, there’s plenty to explore here. Some choice episodes include the interviews with Anton Krupicka, Courtney Dauwalter, Joe Gray and Clare Gallagher

2. Buckethead - Northern Lights

Okay, this is a song. But listen to it twice and you’ve got the length of an album. Northern Lights is a 14-minute 20-second song that I never tire of. Buckethead is unlike any other musician on the planet. From acoustic ballads to electric licks, his instrumental doozies are technical and melodic journeys. Allow his shredding strings to guide you along the road or trail.

3. Spooked

As a fan of horror, I always consider it Halloween season. But October is right around the corner, so it’s right and proper spooky season. Hosted by the immaculate storyteller Glynn Washington, Spooked collects tales of the strange and macabre from listeners. The audio production is brilliant with each episode crafted to induce chills.

4. Podington Bear - Dance

This album is a feel-good, instrumental stream that makes me think of VW buses parked on a beach near a setting sun. Groove smooth to the fantastic tunes of Podington Bear. If you’d like a taste, listen to the song “Lip Gloss” below. Go on, try not to dance.

5. Wild Thing

I’m sticking to the strange with this final podcast. When journalist Laura Krantz discovers she’s related to one of the biggest figures in the Bigfoot research community, she begins an investigation that takes her deep into the realms of belief, society and science. Like Spooked, this podcast is just amazing audio storytelling. I’ve listened to the first season multiple times and am so psyched that a second season (covering extraterrestrials) is currently being released.
