A Photoshoot with Fleet Feet Sacramento

Above the rooftops and telephone wires, a tsunami sunrise soaked the morning sky. Light rays radiated waves of fiery yellow that bled to peach before crashing into a foamy blue-gray.

In the parking lot outside of Insight Coffee on 8th Street in Sacramento, photographer, podcaster, race director and runner Luis Escobar aimed his camera at the wall of a building. To the side, a small group of runners stood in a line. They ran one after another, each waiting for Luis’ go-ahead. The camera shutter stuttered as they jogged into the frame.

When it was my turn, I darted across the frame, all the while self-conscious of how my body moved through space. I’d never “modeled” for a photoshoot before, but hey, there's a first for everything, right?

Over the weekend, I had the radical opportunity to participate in a Fleet Feet photoshoot. Earlier last week, I saw a call for runners on the store’s Instagram page and DM’d them for details. For months, I’d been meaning to get more involved with the local running community, and this seemed like the perfect chance.

The group gathered at 6:45 a.m. in downtown Sacramento. Annalisa Romero, Fleet Feet’s marketing director, and Sean Garbutt, Fleet Feet’s training programs director, guided us from location to location.

The whole photoshoot was a stellar experience, a weekend morning full of exploring downtown Sacramento and meeting people from the local running community. Among the group were a few ultra runners, so I couldn’t help but pepper them some naive questions during our meanderings.

I’m excited to see how the photos turn out. I'm sure they'll be awesome. Until then, you can satiate your curiosity with my blurry photos here.

Also, if you want to learn more about Fleet Feet, you should check out Luis’ podcast the Road Dog Podcast. In the episode embedded below, Luis interviews Sean and Fleet Feet Trial Coach Mo Bartley. It’s an awesome listen, fit for your next run.
