Six Things You Think While Running For Six Hours
2020 is finally behind us. Man, what a year. It was a year of tumultuous change. We all faced challenges, but I know when it comes to my life, I try to dwell on the positives over the negatives, on the smiles over the frowns.
When I reflect on 2020, I’m grateful for many things. I’m grateful for my family and my friends, for the love I’ve found and for the connections I’ve made. I’m incredibly grateful for the kindness others have extended my way despite these strained and often scary circumstances. I can only hope to pass on that generosity and goodwill to other I interact with.
Despite 2020’s curveballs, it was a banner running year for me. In total, I ran 1,021 miles, put to bed my first 50K and learned a good deal about the necessity of rest and recovery. I made a lot of memories along the way.
To kickoff 2021, I decided to participate in the New Year’s One Day Virtual Race (organized by Coastal Trail Races). I signed up for the six-hour event. The goal: see how far you can run in six hours.
So on Saturday, January 2nd, I ran. I ran for six hours. I ran around and around McKinley Park. Under gray skies and through pesky drizzles, I ran. In total, I ran 29 miles.
And man, was it tough. I’ll be honest, I struggled during the duration of the six hours. Yes, there were moments of smooth movement but they flashed by fast. Mainly, it was a strugglefest. Additionally, I planned the run poorly. I forgot my water bottle and forgot to wear a sweater.
When all is said and done though, I’m happy with the 29 miles I ran. Here are six thoughts I had along the way:
1. "Wow, I really need contacts."
Either I need contacts or windshield wipers for glasses need to be made for the masses |
2. "I wonder if my water bottle and sweater miss me as much as I miss them."
Evidently, my water bottle did not miss me. No word from my sweater yet |
Update: They did not fall off |
4. "If I shiver long enough, I should generate enough friction to warm my body, right?"
5. "I can't wait until this is over."
Though this is an old photo, it perfectly captures my mood on Saturday |
6. "When's my next race?"
Here's to hoping this happens |
