Five More Podcasts for Your Next Run
I like to pass the time while running by listening to podcasts. It helps me take my mind off the miles and slip into a different headspace, one divorced from the physical motion of the body. This is especially helpful on the doldrum days when I feel sluggish, when running is the last thing I want to do. Podcasts help me stay on schedule. They're a distraction that ultimately feeds my running habit.
Luckily, we're in the golden age of podcasting. With around 2 million active podcasts, there's a slew of content to pick from. Below, you'll find some podcasts that have kept me company on the streets and trails.
Happy listening and running. And remember, be observant and aware when wearing headphones.
1. Bent
Hosts Mile Nolte and Joe Cermele take listeners on a journey through the fishing world in this excellent podcast. They just released their 34th episode and trust me when I say this, you don't need to be an angler to find this podcast interesting. "Even if you're mildly fish curious," the show's summary reads, "this podcast has something for you: regional fishing reports, tackle tips, trash talk, etymology, weekly news, trivia even suggestions on how to piss off your fishing guide." I've found the last sentence to be true as I've sifted through the Bent catalog. Here's to picking up a fishing rod soon.
2. Bad Friends
This podcast is a goddamn riot. But what else can you expect from comedians Bobby Lee and Andrew Santino? Their studio must be like a pressure cooker with all the humor and anger being thrown around. Inappropriate, dark, NSFW, and hilarious, Bad Friends is a fun escape from reality and a great reminder that, above all, laughter and levity help carry us through existence. Especially during dark times.
3. The MeatEater Podcast
You may be familiar with Steven Rinella's MeatEater show on Netflix, but did you know there's also a MeatEater podcast? And did you further know that many episodes are close to two hours long?!
Full disclosure, I'm a sucker for long-form podcasts and as my interest in hunting and fishing grows, I find myself ingesting more hunting and fishing content. But like Bent (which is also a MeatEater Podcast production), The MeatEater Podcast can be enjoyed by both hunters and non-hunters (me) alike. I recommend starting with the episode featuring Dan Flores, a wildlife historian who wrote an amazing book about coyotes called Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History
4. Your Mom's House
I'm hitting you with another comedy podcast, one that's been running for years now. Your Mom's House is hosted by comedy couple Christina Pazsitzky and Tom Segura and features the two waxing poetic about all the strange, odd, and gross things you can find on the Internet. While there is a video component to this podcast, you can always listen to it while running. Just allow the audio to help you visualize the often strange and obscene videos these two crazy cats find. This podcast is also inappropriate and NSFW.
5. Ultrarunning History
And finally, my last recommendation is a podcast about ultrarunning. Ultrarunning History is a deep dive into a sport that's quickly become an obsession of mine. Hosted by Davy Crockett, the podcast covers the many facets of this amazing endurance sport. Curious about the history of the Barkley Marathons? There's an episode about that. How about the myths, legends, and folklore around the Western States 100? Yup, there's an episode about that too. And 73 others that are waiting just for you.
